No return to T20Is: Mashrafe

                No return to T20Is: Mashrafe

Mashrafe Bin Mortaza will not be returning to the T20 internationals, the player maintained in an interview with Prothom Alo on Monday. Although the decision was taken in a haste, he won't change it, said the Norail Express.

Q: Many are yet to digest the news that you won't be playing T20 internationals anymore. Even the BCB chief has said that you had only stepped down from captaincy. Will you reconsider the decision?
Mashrafe: Nope. Most of the decisions I took in my life were quick ones. Even my family thinks my decisions are at times impulsive. Sports and emotion are synonymous. The only regret is that I wanted to retire telling everyone beforehand. Let's not talk about why I could not do so. I have taken a decision and I will stick to it. True, the decision was taken very quickly, but I think I have made the right call.

Q: No regrets about the decision to quit T20Is? Could you not make the final appearance at home, considering the pulse of your fans?

Mashrafe: I don't want to go into details. It's sad that I could not fulfill the fans' wishes. I have been playing for 15-16 years. The love I have got from the people of Narail and the countrymen has been my strength. I am committed to them and I wanted to take the decision here. But I am still playing ODIs. I hope I will call it a day telling everyone beforehand.

Q: When did you decide to call it quits?

Mashrafe: I took the decision in 30 minutes, on the night before the match. The team was told during a meeting at 3:30pm. My father said I should have taken the decision once I had returned home. But I thought I should declare it then.

Q: Nobody had announced their retirement while doing the toss. Why did you do so? You could have declared it after the match or after the series?

Mashrafe: Yes, they could have happened. There is a reason behind choosing that particular time, but I cannot go into details (laughs). I don't want to blame anybody and I have no complaints.

Q: Rumours have it that other senior players will also be rested in the T20s, which was followed by your retirement. Does what others say influence you?

Mashrafe: When people say negative things that do get inside you. But at the end of the day, it's your decision. True, there is mental pressure. But you will get to know if you have done something wrong or someone else has created problems for you.

Q: We hear the board is mulling three different captains in three different formats. You were asked only to step down as a captain, not to quit playing T20s. Any comments?

Mashrafe: I won't say anything to this end. This ground, these players, this board - it's my family. In my 16-year career, I have never gone beyond the words of the board. I don't want a debate at the end of my career when there were no words being said in the last 16 years.

Q: Would you have retired had these things, which you don't want to talk about, not happened?

Mashrafe: I don't regret the decision. No complaints. I am happy with it, Alhamdulillah.
